Slower Pace of Life

There's a little fishing village not faraway where you will always find someone has a card game going on a makeshift table between the  fishing boats pulled up nearly onto the road.

Or just standing around chatting as the sun comes down.
I've sketched some of them more than once and even noticed that the man on the right in the top sketch has grown  bit fatter over the years....if only they knew they were being observed!

These are wonderful paintings of the men talking. I love how you made them look so spontaneous and fresh.

I just love seeing your work, and these two little studies are perfectly charming. I really like all the details in the first one, and the background is just right. The second one is just great! They would be charmed if they saw them .... I bet they would want them to keep! nancy

These are great Cathy! I like the shadows you achieved and your special style really tells this story of the two friends nicely!

The fishermen have regular card playing sessions in the Old Town at Corralejo (where we have our holiday home). The noise is tremendous sometimes when a game is particularly exciting.

Beautifully observed in your paintings Cathy. Do you photograph them first or sketch from life?

I do both Sue, sometimes I sketch quickly with a pen then put the colour in later. The hardest part is trying not being noticed!

These are wonderful! Thanks for sharing.

haha I know what you mean. I've often used hubby as a decoy when trying to photograph 'characters' - I make him stand close to my subjects and I pretend to photograph him !!

That's funny about the man's weight! I am impressed by the first one - I know how hard it is to paint a face in watercolor without the benefit of line and I like them around the table, but the second - with line, has a certain style I like. Ain't sketching in public fun?
